The First Day

If your child is attending preschool for the first time, it's natural for you to be a little nervous. Many children settle in quickly and happily into preschool. For some, separation from mum or dad in the mornings can be a little more difficult, especially in the first few weeks. So what can you do?

* always speak in a positive way about preschool (and even if you are a bit nervous, try not to share that with your child).

* you don't need to leave straight away in the morning. Stay for a while - see what your child is doing. You can even join in the activities - just let a staff member know if that's what you'd like to try.

* when it's time to leave ALWAYS say goodbye to your child, and be reassuring that you will be back later when it's time to go home. Then depart promptly with a smile and a wave.

* if you know your child is likely to be upset when you leave, please let one of us know that you're leaving, and then say goodbye, sounding confident and happy. We promise we will manage your child, and if he or she isn't settled and happy within 20 minutes or so, we will give you a call. You are also welcome to call us if you want to double check that all is well.

Very rarely, a child continues being upset when separated from you. If it goes on for more than a few weeks, then please, talk options through with the preschool director.
